Doing Right

English: Hallmark Gold Crown Store

I recently purchased some Valentine’s Day cards at a Hallmark store using a buy one get one free coupon. I was buying three cards, so I indicated to the cashier that I would like to use the coupon on the two cards of highest value. She mentioned that she was supposed ring up the card of lowest value as the free one, but immediately followed that statement by saying, “I’m just going to enter the maximum value of the coupon instead of making you do two transactions or any of that kind of bologna.” I liked her.

That cashier did right by her customer in spite of the stated “rule.” There needs to be more customer-facing workers like that. I guess the rest of us would also do well to remember this lesson because in reality we all have “customers.” Managers, coworkers, family, friends…they all have expectations and needs for us to meet or exceed. Hopefully we can all remember to focus on doing right more than anything else.
